The Brief
Pubbly's learning products run on an in-house 2D game engine rather than a licensed toolkit like Unity or Construct, so new development work has to fit inside an existing codebase and asset pipeline. Pubbly needed a partner comfortable working inside someone else's engine and extending the product library from within that architecture.
Our Approach
XGameDev supports Pubbly across three types of interactive material:
- Educational games built for active, hands-on practice rather than passive reading
- Interactive books that combine narrative pages with in-line interaction
- Maths activities that walk children through a problem step by step, checking their answers as they go
All of it runs in a browser: HTML5-based, so the same activity works on a school desktop, a classroom tablet, or a phone at home, without an install or a specific device to target.
This is an ongoing engagement rather than a single delivered build. Our role is to work inside Pubbly's existing engine and codebase, extend it with new games, books, and activities as the curriculum grows, and keep the whole library consistent as it scales across products. That means understanding the constraints of someone else's engine architecture before adding to it, the same discipline we'd apply to a co-development engagement inside a client's Unity project.
The Outcome
The output is a growing library of browser-based games, books, and maths activities that give children a way to practise skills through active participation, on whatever device they have access to, with no installation step between a child and the activity.
