The Brief

Rescue Wars Online (RWO) exists to raise funds for a family-owned not-for-profit rescue zoo that cares for injured and orphaned wildlife. Players take on the role of a teddy bear, rescuing animals to build their own zoo, inside a massively multiplayer online game with an open-world environment and story-driven missions, a bigger technical scope than a typical fundraising game usually asks for.

Our Approach

We built RWO with Unity cross-platform development for iOS, Android, and WebGL, with real-time multiplayer originally running on GameSparks, Node.js, and JavaScript. When GameSparks was deprecated, we replaced the backend-as-a-service layer with Playfab and rebuilt the real-time functionality on Unity's Photon Networking. Migrating live multiplayer infrastructure to a different backend and a different networking layer, on a game that's still running for its players, is a materially different problem than building it once and walking away; it's the kind of long-term maintenance work that comes with owning a live multiplayer product after the first release.

The Outcome

RWO gives its rescue zoo an ongoing multiplayer fundraising game across iOS, Android, and WebGL, one that's already survived a full backend and networking migration without losing its live player base, and continues supporting the zoo's wildlife care work.
