The Brief

Curriculum Concepts International is our longest-standing client, one we still assist with educational content today, and Grammarai was their attempt to make English-language learning genuinely appealing to early teens. Their brief was specific: a samurai-style fighting game that could hook a young player's attention without violent graphics, with English tutoring built into the mechanics rather than layered on top as a quiz between fights.

Our Approach

We built Grammarai as a cross-platform educational game in Unity and C#, combining RPG and endless-runner mechanics so the game had genuine replay value rather than a linear lesson-by-lesson structure. Behind the gameplay, the technology stack covered a lot of ground: IBM Watson for language processing, Node.js and DevOps for the backend, Angular for the admin tooling, and Firebase and AWS S3 for hosting and storage. The game runs its own CMS and LMS, so Curriculum Concepts International can manage content and track player progress without coming back to us for every update.

The 3D character and environment assets came from an external 3D modeller working directly with our team, integrated into the Unity project alongside the gameplay and backend systems we built.

The Outcome

Grammarai shipped as a cross-platform educational game that plays like a real game first, RPG progression and endless-runner pacing, with English tutoring built into that structure rather than bolted onto it, backed by a CMS/LMS that gives Curriculum Concepts International ongoing control over content without needing to touch code. The relationship has outlasted the original project: we've continued supporting them with educational content since.
