The Brief

Syrinscape brings dynamic, layered sound effects, music, and ambient noise to tabletop role-playing games, letting a game master shift the audio in real time as a scene changes. The Interaction Consortium engaged Jacques directly for Unity development on the app, with one specific constraint: the existing codebase ran on an older version of Unity, so the work needed someone comfortable working with an earlier iteration of the engine rather than assuming current tooling and APIs.

Our Approach

Working inside an established, older Unity codebase means the priority is stability, not a rewrite. Jacques implemented new features and fixed bugs within Syrinscape's existing architecture, adding to the app's library of customisable sound effects, music, and ambient audio without disrupting the version of Unity it was already built and tested against. That kind of engagement, take an existing product's constraints as given and work productively within them, comes up often in our Unity development work, particularly with long-running products that can't afford an engine upgrade mid-release cycle.

The Outcome

Syrinscape's players and game masters got a growing library of audio that can be customised to fit any scenario or game world, spatial soundscapes for a wizard's tower, a rainstorm, or a tavern brawl, layered and mixed live during a session rather than triggered as flat sound clips.
