Engineering for fitness and movement products
XGameDev provides fitness app development and technical support for product teams building exercise and movement experiences. Our work combines Unity mobile engineering, interface implementation, asset optimisation and the backend and release systems around an app.
We can join an existing team, take on a defined feature or investigate a build or performance problem. For a new product, we start by reviewing the intended interaction and technical fit. We are based in Australia and work with clients internationally.
Our contribution to WeStretch
WeStretch creates personalised stretching routines with an animated guide on Android and iOS. XGameDev has supported the existing product and its team since January 2023.
The engagement began with Unity build and DevOps support. The client needed help with Universal Rendering Pipeline integration and automated mobile builds, including an Android build failure that occurred in automation while local builds succeeded.
Jacques's work has expanded into full-stack development, technical consulting and Google Cloud Platform architecture. He also migrated the build workflow from GitLab to GitHub runners. Melanie has contributed level design, asset optimisation, and UI design and implementation within the app.
The case study describes our role alongside the client's team. WeStretch's personalised routines are product context; our contribution covers the engineering and design work set out above.
Work we can scope for your app
- Unity app development: implement agreed features, connect screens and content, and work within the structure of an existing project.
- Visual guidance and interface work: integrate supplied movement content and 3D assets, implement controls and prepare assets for mobile use.
- Backend and cloud support: connect the app to its services and review the infrastructure needed for its data and content.
- Mobile build and release engineering: investigate Android and iOS build failures, automate repeatable builds and resolve platform-specific integration issues.
- Maintenance and performance: review faults, profile the app on agreed devices and plan updates to dependencies and release tooling.
We establish the work against your product's current code, content and requirements. Exercise programming and movement advice come from your qualified content team; our role is to implement the agreed software behaviour.
Taking over part of an existing product
An established app can have constraints that aren't visible in a feature brief: engine versions, native plugins, rendering settings, cloud dependencies or manual release steps. We begin with access to the relevant project and a reproducible example of the issue or intended change.
For a build problem, that might mean comparing the developer machine with the automated environment. For a performance issue, it means measuring the affected flow on a named device. The first deliverable should resolve a defined question and make the next piece of work easier to estimate.
Planning a new fitness application
Describe the experience a user needs to complete: choosing content, following a guided session, navigating a 3D demonstration or reviewing progress. Identify what content you already own and which systems need to supply it. We can then assess a prototype scope and the appropriate delivery approach.
Any requirements involving subscriptions, wearable devices, health data or third-party services need a separate technical review. Existing Unity fitness experience does not make every integration a ready-made component.
Support through later releases
Mobile products continue to need maintenance after launch. We can scope ongoing app support, backend engineering and build automation around your team's responsibilities.
Tell us whether you have an existing app, its current technology and platforms, and the feature or issue you want to address. Include a target date and any known release blocker so we can suggest a useful first step.
