The Brief

Paper4trees, a carbon reduction programme, wanted a browser game that put their mascot, Zero the Hero, to work teaching kids how to sort household waste correctly, glass, paper and cardboard, cans, e-waste, and plastic, without turning the lesson into a lecture.

Our Approach

We built the game with our Construct development services, designed as a standalone activity that could sit directly on Paper4trees' own site rather than needing a separate app or platform. Players sort items into the correct bin as Zero the Hero guides them through, with a high scores table giving the activity some replay value beyond a single playthrough, and an in-game instructions screen so a child can start playing without needing an adult to explain the rules first. The game was sponsored by the ANZ Staff Foundation and the Tindall Foundation, funding that reflects the programme's actual charitable backing rather than a standard commercial engagement.

The sorting mechanic had to be simple enough for a child to understand quickly, but explicit enough to teach the difference between waste streams. That made feedback, item readability, and the instruction screen part of the learning design as much as interface polish.

The Outcome

The Great Waste Sort gave Paper4trees a standalone, browser-based teaching tool that turns waste-sorting education into something kids actively play rather than passively read, backed by real environmental-sector funders and built to live directly on the programme's own site.
