At XGameDev, we were responsible for developing the multiplayer experience for Wizard Games' Block Gun 3D: Ghost Ops between 12 Jan 2014 and 23 Jul 2015.
The Brief
Block Gun 3D: Ghost Ops put players in the role of elite Ghost Ops soldiers, fighting through an explosive single-player campaign or facing off against other players in multiplayer matches. Wizard Games needed the multiplayer side built and supported over an extended release cycle, not a one-off feature drop, hence the 18-month engagement rather than a short contract.
Our Approach
Using Unity, C#, and Photon PUN, we designed and optimised the online gameplay for a smooth, engaging multiplayer experience. Jacques focused on:
- Building matchmaking flows so players could get into a deathmatch quickly
- Ensuring stable network performance under real-world conditions, including latency and device variation outside a local test network
- Creating the multiplayer framework itself, the systems that kept matches synchronised and fair as players joined, fought, and left
Alongside the gameplay networking, we built a PHP and MySQL backend for custom analytics and logging, giving Wizard Games visibility into how the multiplayer mode was actually being played rather than relying on Unity's own client-side telemetry.
Technologies Used to Develop Multiplayer in Block Gun 3D: Ghost Ops
- Unity for cross-platform mobile game development
- C# for client-side code
- Photon PUN for real-time multiplayer networking
- PHP and MySQL for custom backend analytics and logging
The Outcome
Over the 18-month engagement, Ghost Ops shipped a multiplayer mode that held up under live conditions: stable matchmaking, synchronised deathmatches, and a backend that gave Wizard Games real data on how players were using it, all built on top of a mobile FPS that also had to keep its single-player campaign running smoothly.
