Project Summary
Step Out Academy is an outdoor learning app that turns real places into guided education experiences. XGameDev worked on the Unity mobile app, Node.js API, Node.js multiplayer server, QR and AR integration, and the 3D models used inside the app.
The app needed to work on real phones outside a controlled classroom: students scan codes, move through locations, open AR scenes, complete activities, and join live group sessions. Melanie Leemans modelled all of the custom 3D assets for the project.
The Challenge
Step Out Academy turns real locations into guided learning tours, so the app has to behave like a field guide, classroom tool, map, AR viewer, activity system, and group session app at the same time.
Students may walk through a heritage site, garden, town trail, or school grounds with weak reception. A teacher needs a code that puts the class into the right session. A parent may scan a QR code from a printed sign. The app needs to know where the learner is, load the right stop, play the right audio, open the right AR scene, and keep the tour moving when GPS drifts.
For the learner, it should feel simple: scan, follow the trail, see the model, finish the activity. Underneath that, Step Out Academy depends on mobile reliability, location handling, AR behaviour, QR entry paths, multiplayer session state, and 3D content that runs well on iOS and Android devices.
Cross-platform Unity AR App
The mobile app runs on Android and iOS from a shared Unity codebase. XGameDev worked on the outdoor AR experience where content is tied to real-world stops, map state, device location, heading, AR Foundation tracking, remote asset bundles, and learner feedback.
The app can guide a learner through a tour, load AR content per stop, play audio, show transcripts, run activities, and return the learner to the map flow.
Some of the work was product polish. Some of it was field engineering: GPS drift, compass issues, asset bundle unload bugs, native Android build problems, iOS build quirks, and QR scans that had to happen without freezing the camera.
Node.js API and Multiplayer Server
The mobile app talks to a Node.js API built for app-facing data, tour loading, configuration, and mobile flows. That API gave the Unity app a stable contract, which matters when the product has to keep working across app releases and changing learning content.
A separate Node.js multiplayer server handles live sessions. Using Socket.IO, the server can manage room joins, session codes, teacher/student state, and the real-time events needed when a group is moving through a tour together.
This was practical backend work: connection handling, room behaviour, app handshakes, session clean-up, and the boring failure cases that decide whether a live classroom feature feels solid or fragile.
QR and AR Integration
QR codes became a major entry path for schools, families, and physical sites. XGameDev worked through app links, hosted verification files, redirect behaviour, organisation-scoped entry paths, and store fallbacks so a scan could take someone to the right place.
On the AR side, the work sat where Unity meets the phone: AR Foundation tracking, camera state, map state, GPS drift, heading data, asset loading, and scene recovery. Outdoor AR asks a lot from consumer devices, especially once lighting, network conditions, and movement get involved.
The user goal stayed simple: scan, open, learn, move to the next stop. The engineering underneath had to absorb the platform details.
Bankfoot House AR Tour
Step Out Academy also included a large tour for Bankfoot House, a Sunshine Coast heritage site. XGameDev worked on the app-side tour experience so learners could access AR content through the Step Out Academy mobile app while moving through the location.
Melanie created the 3D models for the Bankfoot House tour. That kind of heritage AR work has a different feel from a generic classroom activity: the models need to support a real place, respect the site context, and still load cleanly on phones during an outdoor visit.
3D Models and Mobile Performance
Melanie modelled all of the Step Out Academy 3D models. The asset work had to suit the educational tone of the app while still being sensible for real-time rendering on mobile.
For Unity AR, modelling choices affect more than appearance. Polygon counts, materials, textures, scale, origin points, bundle size, and load timing all show up in the learner experience. The models needed to appear clearly in AR scenes without making the app feel heavy on older phones.
Mini-games, QR Codes, and Offline Use
The app includes learning activities such as Trail Trivia, Fill the Gaps, Tally Table, and image-based tasks. XGameDev worked on mini-game interfaces that made these activities usable on a phone during a tour, including multi-blank drag-and-drop flows, answer gating, final reports, and return paths back into the tour.
QR codes became a major entry path for schools, families, and physical sites. XGameDev worked through Android App Links, iOS Universal Links, hosted verification files, Google Play warnings, QR redirect pages, organisation-scoped links, and app fallback journeys.
Outdoor education also needs slow-network tolerance. The app downloads tour media, de-duplicates assets, caches tour data, invalidates old bundles when new versions appear, and gives feedback while AR content loads.
Outcome
Step Out Academy now has a connected mobile product: a Unity app for Android and iOS, a Node.js API, a Node.js multiplayer server, QR entry flows, AR integration, mobile-ready 3D models, Bankfoot House tour content, mini-games, and release work across both app stores.
The hard part was making those pieces behave like one product outdoors, with teachers, students, parents, app stores, weak networks, and real devices involved.
