A serious game is a complete playable activity built around a purpose such as learning or practice. Gamification adds game-like elements to an existing activity or product. Game-based learning describes a way of learning through games; it is not a particular software platform.
For a buyer, the useful distinction is what you need to commission. Are people entering a game with its own rules, or continuing an existing task with added feedback, progress or rewards?
Start with what the participant does
Consider a waste-education project. In a sorting game, the player chooses a bin for an item, receives feedback and tries again. The activity itself is the game. A recycling portal that adds progress markers to an existing checklist is closer to gamification. Both might support the same communication goal, but the design and implementation are different.
XGameDev's Great Waste Sort is a game for Paper4trees: its Zero the Hero mascot guides players through waste sorting. The City of Melville's interactive ad is a separate browser activity for residents. These projects provide concrete examples of public-education games without assuming that all educational software needs the same format.
When a serious game fits the brief
A game can give the participant a bounded space in which to make decisions, see consequences and repeat a task. It can suit a subject where the interaction is part of the explanation: identifying a category, allocating a resource or exploring how a system works.
The learning or communication goal still needs to be specific. “Make it engaging” does not tell a developer what a player should learn or what the organisation will accept at review. A more useful brief might ask players to distinguish several waste types and explain why an incorrect choice is wrong.
The game design needs approved content, understandable rules, controls suited to the audience and feedback that explains the result. It also needs a delivery plan: public browser access, an installed app, classroom devices or a learning platform.
When gamification fits an existing product
Gamification starts with a workflow that already has value, such as completing a course or practising a skill. Progress indicators, challenges and rewards can help communicate that workflow, but adding points does not fix unclear instructions or unnecessary steps.
Ask which behaviour a mechanic is intended to support. A visible completion marker might help someone resume a course. A public leaderboard introduces questions about competition, identity and whether participants have comparable opportunities. It may be inappropriate for the audience even if it is straightforward to implement.
In Compassion Dash, XGameDev added points, a shop and character features to an existing educational game. That is an example of implementing progression mechanics inside a game. It should not be presented as evidence that the same mechanics improved learning or participation in an unrelated product.
A simulation is another design choice
A training simulation models a situation in which a learner practises decisions or actions. It can contain game elements, but the key question is how well the interaction represents the task being practised. Subject experts need to approve the scenario and assessment rules.

Measure the objective, not just activity
Starts, completions, scores and replay counts describe use of the software. They can help identify confusing instructions or where people leave. They do not, on their own, demonstrate knowledge retention, changed behaviour or a business outcome.
Choose evaluation measures with the people responsible for the subject. A project may need a before-and-after assessment, an observed practical task or follow-up research. Agree who designs that evaluation and what data the software must supply. Avoid collecting personal information simply because an analytics tool makes it possible.
Questions to settle before requesting a quote
- Who participates, and where will they use it?
- What should they understand or be able to do afterwards?
- Is there an existing activity or product to improve?
- What action will the participant take on screen?
- Who approves the content and assessment rules?
- Which devices, access needs and reporting systems matter?
- What will a small prototype need to demonstrate?
